A long time ago, my mom told me how she picks a perfect watermelon. I never really understood her method until this year. Maybe the pregnancy made me a bit wiser? Who knows!? What I do know is that I haven’t had a bad watermelon yet - no matter where I buy it.
I only have one problem when it comes to watermelons - I don’t know when to stop. Before getting pregnant, I would eat 1/2 watermelon instead of a meal. You think I’m joking?! I’m not. I would cut the watermelon in half and grab a spoon and go at it. It’s a sickness and I’m willing to admit it.
Now that I’m pregnant, in my third trimester, that’s pretty much impossible. I can barely a few slices before feeling full. This really upsets me but what can I do? On a brighter note, it actually leaves some watermelon for my dear husband and I get to enjoy it for more than 2 days.
So how do I pick a watermelon? Well, there are different schools of thought. One says - look for the yellow spot. This one didn’t have one and it was incredible. Others say - listen for the thump. I do the opposite. With my palm, I hit the watermelon until I hear a more of a hollow sound. You may have to hit 4 or 5 until you hear it, but it’ll happen. The yellow spot thing never worked for me. This method, on the other hand, has not yet failed me.
If you have any proven methods that always work for you, let me know and I’ll share them!
How do I store the watermelon w/o cutting it up? Easy - leave the part you won’t be using in tact (like the picture above) and put the cut face down on a plate. I don’t even use plastic. Make sure it’s not a totally flat plate b/c the watermelon may give off some juice and it’ll give all over your fridge.
